Shailesh Kumar – The Untold Story of a Forgotten Bollywood Actor

Shailesh Kumar, originally named Shambhunath Purohit, was an actor whose life journey reflects the unpredictable and emotional world of Indian cinema. Born on 21 January 1939 in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, he grew up far away from the glamour of Bollywood. Yet destiny had already written a different path for him—one that would take him from the lanes of Jodhpur to the film studios of Mumbai.

How an Accidental Studio Visit Changed His Life

During his younger days, Shailesh Kumar traveled to Mumbai simply for sightseeing. While exploring the city, he happened to visit a film studio where a movie titled Bahuroopia was being shot. The producer of the film, known as Rati Bhai, noticed the tall and impressive personality of young Shailesh.

Amazed by his screen presence, Rati Bhai walked up to him and asked: “Would you like to work in films?” Shailesh, unaware of how the film industry worked, politely declined. He soon returned to Jodhpur, but Rati Bhai’s words planted a seed deep inside him—an unshakable desire to become an actor.

The Decision to Return to Mumbai

Back in Jodhpur, Shailesh could not forget the idea of acting. He made up his mind to return to Mumbai and try his luck as a hero. However, before he could leave, his family arranged his marriage. Despite this responsibility, his dream remained strong and unbroken.

Coming from a respectable and financially stable household, Shailesh refused to take money from his father. Instead, he sold a gold chain gifted to him during his wedding for just 75 rupees and set out for Mumbai—to chase a dream most people only imagine.

Friendship with Dharmendra and the First Break

In Mumbai, Shailesh Kumar met Dharmendra, who was also struggling to find work during that time. The two formed a close bond as they navigated the challenges of the film industry.

Shailesh finally got his first acting opportunity in the 1960 film Nai Maa. Although the role was small, he performed it with sincerity and dedication. A year later, in 1961, he appeared in Bhabhi Ki Chudiyan—the film that brought him recognition. Dharmendra even told him, “You are a lucky man; this film will give you a name.”

The movie featured Balraj Sahni and Meena Kumari in prominent roles, and Shailesh played the character of Meena Kumari’s brother-in-law. This role opened new doors for him.

A Career Filled with Supporting Roles

After the initial success, Shailesh Kumar appeared in many films. However, most of his characters were supporting roles. Lead roles never came his way as often as he had hoped.

In 1968, he starred alongside actress Mumtaz in the film Golden Eye: Secret Agent 077, an Indian-style spy action film inspired by the James Bond series. The film featured a popular song, “Haye Main Mar Jaoon.” Although the movie was considered B-grade, it gave Shailesh visibility at a time when Mumtaz was rising to become one of Bollywood’s top actresses.

The Struggle, Illness, and a Career-Ending Rumor

While his colleagues—Dharmendra and Mumtaz—achieved massive stardom, Shailesh continued to struggle for impactful roles. When he was around 30 years old, he developed a thyroid condition. During that era, thyroid treatment was done primarily through radiation therapy.

For treatment, Shailesh visited Tata Hospital, which was widely known for cancer treatment at the time. Someone who saw him there mistakenly assumed he was suffering from cancer and spread this rumor across the film industry.

This false rumor destroyed his career. Producers stopped offering him roles, and work opportunities vanished overnight. Though his thyroid problem was eventually cured, the damage to his reputation had already been done.

The Return to Jodhpur

After years of struggle and disappointment, Shailesh Kumar tried everything to revive his career, but nothing worked. In 1978, he finally decided to leave Mumbai and return to his hometown Jodhpur along with his wife Pushpa and family.

He lived the rest of his life quietly in Jodhpur, away from the glamour of cinema. On 21 April 2017, Shailesh Kumar passed away, leaving behind a story filled with dreams, challenges, hope, and heartbreak.
